The Master in Car Design and Mobility is based on the principle of "learning by designing". In order to Design it is not important what the theory describes as possible (because it has already been done, or because it is statistically probable): the designer is interested in the potentials, those possibilities the theory does not consider. What is interesting is the method with which to direct the existing know-how towards an innovative view. The Master in Car Design and mobility - that lasts 11 months - is articulated into lectures, seminars, workshops and a final master thesis. The whole activity is divided in the following way:
January - February: introductive lectures dedicated to Design culture.
February - July: 5 or 6 workshops facing key themes in the field of Transportation Design.
July: presentation of the themes for the final Master thesis.
September - December: development of the Master thesis articulated into lectures, project reviews, theme seminars with companies, technical visits.
December: final master projects dissertation and final exhibition.
According to this philosophy, the theoretical notions (cultural, methodological, technical) are transferred to the students during workshops with specific themes: this is essential information, a "state of the art" overview necessary to surpass. During the workshops this "surpassing" is represented by the projects the students are working on.
The final thesis is a project that gathers in itself all the skills treated until that moment. Apart from the quality of the project, the thesis is interesting in terms of Design process. This experience starts from a vision and gets to the detailed Design; in this journey the students will be asked to give a sense to their project and to keep a high level of research in all the steps of the process.
In the future editions of the Master Course, the themes of the workshops might be different from these descriptions, still keeping the same basic contents.
Each vehicle is a vector that moves long an infrastructure. The number of vectors per each surface of the infrastructure is growing out of control, generating the environmental problems we are all familiar with. This problem can only be faced in terms of Strategic Design. The choice to Design services for mobility, rather than vehicles is at the basis of any environmentally sustainable attitude. Urban planning, infrastructure and vehicles Design, territorial sociology and marketing are part of this laboratory.
Passive safety will become more and more important in the Design of any vehicle. At the basis of this renewed need there is the discipline of ergonomics that starting from digital technology is about to change deeply. Nowadays it is possible to Design the interior of vehicles in terms of "human based design", improving safety and comfort standards.
The everyday reality of Car Design is made of style. Companies Design according to the brand language always with a growing attention to the brand/lifestyle relation. The processes of identification are extended from the vehicle to the system of products related to it: the world of cars adopts analysis and Design processes that are more and more similar to fashion ones. Any innovation in the above-mentioned sectors (safety, environment, interaction) goes through the Design of a style able to represent both innovative contents and brand values.
Transportation engineering gives the designer precise constraints. Platforms, engines, the main components of bodies and interiors are more and more standardised and less modifiable. Recently, the disassembling processes have become part of the skills of Design centres and the company co-Design/supplier is an ordinary practice. It becomes more and more evident that to Design the product also means to Design the process, managing the deriving complexity and compromises.
Each travel implies three actors: vehicle, infrastructure and driver. The Design of interactions between these entities is the best opportunity to reduce risks and troubles of mobility. The driver-vehicle-infrastructure interaction is the basis for active safety that involves all the senses of the driver; it concerns hardware and software, it involves very different systems of data acquisition and it requires sophisticated techniques and communication tools. This technology - sometimes too complex - implies that it is important to Design the way the individual can interface with it, the level of needed complexity, how to eliminate instruction manuals both from the point of view of the driver and the passenger. It is one of the most complex and stimulating sectors for interactive Design.
All the workshops will be about general topics that will be developed by the students in the different vehicle types: cars, bikes, trains, lorries, campers...
Entertainment and Travelling is the only typological workshop:
Transportation Design takes its methods and dedicates its attention especially to the world of four and two wheels. Within this wide world, there is a sector with different rules and dynamics: Yacht Design. It is a special Design area that shares many aspects with tyre transportation (interaction, safety, comfort...) but it also presents various differences. Yachts are the most spread and renowned entertainment vehicles (apart from campers and other special vehicles) and they are becoming more and more sophisticated and important thanks to the innovation of new technologies, their speed and the value leisure time has nowadays. Areas with development possibilities:
- Accessories for Entertainment
- The moving home
- The moving work
- Water transportation
- Air transportation
