The Car Design Master Program lasts from Septembr 2010 to September 2011; it is articulated into lectures, testimonials and field visits, research projects, workshops and a final Master thesis. The Master in Car Design follows the pedagogical approach of “learning by designing”, where participants learn by a direct, active involvement in several design experiences. Here the challenge relies in designing not only what theory and experience say it is possible, but to look beyond and developing concepts that will be the cars of the future, pursuing a method to direct the existing know-how towards an innovating vision.
The program is divided into four sections.

The beginning of the program will consist of a series of lectures dedicated to the Italian car design culture, and to the analysis of current issues in the automotive sector. The aim is twofold: to introduce participants to the world of Italian car design, and to update the skills that students have acquired in their home educational backgrounds, bringing them towards a common vision. Visits to leading Italian car design studios are foreseen, as to the world famous Salone del Mobile – Furniture Fair – in Milan.

WORKSHOPS
lectureWorkshops are the backbone of Domus Academy’s unique learning approach. During workshops, from May to December, students work on different areas of project in collaboration with car designers and partner automotive companies. Every workshop includes lectures (cultural, methodological and technical), meeting with automotive sector experts, and a design project, developed with the supervision of experienced designers. Participants will receive a project brief, they will work under the guidance of a project leader and with the assistance of a tutor, individually or in a small design team. At the end of the workshops, a presentation of the projects’ results will be held, in some cases to a mixed team of faculty members and external experts.

FOCUS
workshopThe Focus is an individual or team research project, where participants are required to investigate an issue relevant to their Master Program. Foreseen at the end of the second workshop, a research on trend and competitive analysis of a car model will be the topic of the 2009/2010 Focus. Each participant will study a specific car model, and will analyse how its design has changed during the time, to take into account family feelings, the evolution of customers’ needs and requirements, past and recent technological developments and new traffic and environmental regulations. The investigations will cover a wide set of markets and models, exploiting the unique possibility offered by the very international profile that all Domus Academy’s Master Programs have, whose participants come from many different countries all over the world.

tesiFINAL MASTER THESIS
In the last months of the program, participants will work on a project that gathers all the competences developed during their studies, starting from a global vision and getting to the design of a detail. Participants to the Master in Car Design will be asked to choose a design theme to be developed, to give a sense to their project and to carry it out keeping an high level of research in all the steps of the design process. Project results will be prepared at an actual professional level, will be shown during the thesis dissertation and will enrich the student’s personal portfolio.
